The Week in Games: Nintendo Directly Gives Internet Nostalgia Boner

If you’re an NBA guy/gal you were probably watching the last few games of the regular season instead of following up on your gaming news. Here’s the important shit.

LOOKS LIKE I’M BUYING A 3DS:

During this week’s Nintendo Direct, the venerable developer announced the next iteration of our beloved Zelda franchise. But wait, it gets even more beloved than you could have ever thought of beloving anything before! This next Zelda will be a bonafide sequel to the 1992 classic, A Link to the Past (hear that intro and go weak at the knees from nostalgia).

Barely anything is known about the new game’s story, but many journalists were able to get hands-on time with the gameplay. The game includes the top-down view of its predecessor while adding the 3rd dimension, making vertical movement key.

I rarely get excited about new releases anymore, but this one has me pumped. I’m hoping it lives up to the original…or at least this original Japanese commercial.

EARTHBOUND VIRTUAL CONSOLE BOUND:

Here’s another tidbit from Nintendo Direct that deserves mention: the classic SNES RPG Earthbound is finally getting a digital release in the US. I’m actually not too excited because I own an SNES and Earthbound and have beaten it already…but if you haven’t played it, its tongue-in-cheek delivery of an alien invasion is timeless and you should totally buy it.

Yes; this game is where that kid with the bat in Super Smash Bros. came from.

NETHERREALM RELEASES A GAME AND ANNOUNCES ITS DLC ALREADY:

On Tuesday, NetherRealm Studios dropped every DC fanboys’ dream fighting game, Injustice: Gods Among Us. The next day, Mortal Kombat creator and Injustice director Ed Boon announced that Lobo would be the first DLC character. If the price structure of the previous Mortal Kombat game is anything to go by, Lobo will probably come with the hefty price tag of $5.

Oh, that’s cool. I was still trying to wrap my head around the fact you released a game–thanks for the up-sell!

BETHESDA GETS READY FOR NEXT PROJECT:

Bethesda said an official goodbye to Skyrim this week and teased their next project with some criptic jpegs. We could only speculate until Friday when it was announced that the teaser images were for The Evil Within.

This is the next game from resident evil creator Shinji Mikami. Check out the trailer. Looks like Mikami is returning to his roots with this horror title, but it feels way more Silent Hill than Resident Evil.

Of course, Bethesda is just publishing this one…so they should be developing something else. That remains to be announced, I suppose.

CHECK OUT THE SEGA PLUTO:

A forum poster and ex-Sega employee shared this prototype followup of the Sega Saturn with the internet this week. The thing is huge; it’s basically a Sega Saturn with a port in the back for internet connectivity.

Actually, it’s not really that cool, so here’s an SNES commercial for a “more realistic” Mario Bros. game.
