Why Art Style Matters in Gaming

I’m addicted to Torchlight. There’s just something satisfying about clicking on monsters until they die, then stopping every few minutes to check your character’s equipment and maybe level up. Sometimes, when a monster doesn’t die from a mere single-click, I click on it again. Sometimes I right click to send a ricocheting shot through said monster, off the wall, and through the original monster’s friend. There isn’t a simpler style of gameplay in existence, and I can’t think of many that have held my undivided attention for so long. My love of Torchlight is wholly unexpected. I only picked it up because it was relatively cheap and I’ve read a ton of good things about it. I was curious, and the price wasn’t enough to dissuade my curiosity. Still, I knew what I was signing up for, and I stepped into Torchlight with very low...

Humble Indie Bundle V Announced – Gamers Upset

The recently announced Humble Indie Bundle V includes some pretty awesome games: Amnesia: The Dark Decent, Limbo, Psychonauts, Bastion, and Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP. A new added twist has some gamers a little angry: this time around, to get Steam keys for your games you need to pay an additional dollar. Since this news has come about gamers have been very upset. xXDeathMarauderXx1923 said the following upon hearing the news. This is getting insane! We gamers don’t deserve this. The Humble Indie Bundle is about us getting games cheap, for whatever price we want. I was going to pay a dollar to get the games, now I have to pay two? I am sick and tired of game companies pulling this kind of shit, first it was the Mass Effect ending, then Diablo 3, and now this? Game companies are going too far, I...

The Lord of Terror Feasts on Your Tears

I am not going to tell you that you can’t dislike something in a game. I am also not going to tell you that you can’t complain about it. What I am going to tell you is that your complaints are completely invalidated when you continue to give the companies you complain about your money. Last week’s biggest PC release was unquestionably Diablo 3. Like every major release lately, it started certain gamers’ tears flowing–and with Diablo 3, they’re flowing hard. Diablo 3 is not a perfect game, but it also isn’t Diablo 2. It never will be, and for those looking for Diablo 2, I recommend playing a game called Diablo 2. I think what bothers me the most about the Diablo 3 fallout is that I am not sure the game ever had a chance. People were salivating, not to play the game,...

How Are You Spending Your Mass Effect 3 Refund?

I swear on Garrus’s spiky head this is my last Mass Effect 3 article.  As such, it’s going to be constructive.  If my previous articles didn’t bring you over to Team Don’t Change It, another attempt has no chance.  And although I could probably spend at least 2000 words explaining why I think those behind the dastardly cupcake attack headed Bioware’s way should shove a Twinkie up their collective ass, I won’t.  It’s time to move on. Let’s talk about you.  There you are, your wallet heavy with your full refund of ME3’s original price from Amazon or Origin, or maybe with the 30 bucks or so you got from Gamestop in exchange for never having to see that miserable piece of crap game ever again (your attitude, not mine).  You’ve got money to burn, friend, but what should you spend it on?  Given your hatred...

The Fall of the Jump

Fellow unwashed denizens of the Interwebs, I find myself severely conflicted.  A sea change is happening in our favorite pastime and I quite honestly can’t decide how I feel about it.  Typically I’m quick to jump one way or the other.  I rarely face a choice this difficult that doesn’t involve lunch.  My life is so hard. My distress revolves around one of gaming’s most ancient rites, a slice of gameplay so pervasive throughout the medium that some might consider it holy–or, perhaps more aptly, hole-y.  Entire games have been built around it, and most modern games at least pay it lip service with a half-assed, half-hearted implementation.  Dear friends, I’m talking about the jump. While playing Enslaved: Odyssey to the West the other day, I was struck by an epiphany: the jump ain’t what it used to be.  Here’s a game where the main...

Why Kard Combat is the Best iPhone Game EVER

Hothead’s Kard Combat has eaten more of my life the last few months than the bigger budget, bigger screen titles I’ve been GameFlying.  Built with the assistance of Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield, Kard Combat puts players in the role of a fat, dumpy, balding, man who lives in his mother’s basement but leaves on occasion to play wizard cards in the local bingo hall.  It isn’t as deep as Magic (I think; I only played that shit like twice), but there’s some serious strategy hidden underneath its accessible exterior.  Kard Combat might just be the iPhone equivalent of sliced bread.  Let me count the ways… No fucking dragging.  Arguably more annoying than the innovative waving-your-arms-like-you’re-having-a-seizure input in every motion controlled game ever, the drag has turned me off to many an iPhone app.  SimCity.  Infinity Blade.  The Oregon Trail.  Maybe my fingers aren’t...
