Pirates Set Sail for Ubisoft

Avast, me hearties! Piracy is running rampant in the PC gaming market–according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, at least. Guillemot claims that 93-95% of PC gamers should be playing whilst wearing an eye patch and swilling rum from a dirty bottle. Shiver my fucking timbers, that’s a huge number, and one about which I’d like to hear some more information. Guillemot didn’t qualify whether that percentage encompasses the entire world, his studio’s little corner of French Canada, or just PC gamers who play on Tuesdays. I’m ridiculous, so I like to imagine that he also included a few shouts of “Sacre bleu!” Regardless, it’s driving Ubisoft toward a free-to-play model. Also according to Guillemot, approximately 7% of free-to-play gamers pay for parts of their otherwise gratis game. Why Your MMO Will Fail

Honestly, I am not even sure why anyone is trying to make MMO games anymore. There hasn’t been a new one that you could even consider moderately successful since the release of World of Warcraft in 2004. Since that time, there have been many MMOs released that have attempted to cash in on the World of Warcraft craze, and all of them have fallen short. Not one has even given WoW a run for it’s money. While I am not an avid fan of WoW, I can’t deny its success. I played for years, but I surely never want to enter that world again. I understand that WoW wasn’t the first MMO; I played Everquest for many years, and I am well aware that Ultima: Online predated that.
