Five More Iconic Gaming Quotes

We’re proud of our original list of the ten most iconic gaming quotes of all time, but there are a number of other lines just as deserving of their own little slice of our corner of the Internet. It’s a nice place, after all, and everybody’s welcome as long as they don’t mind a few terrible jokes about 38 Studios. Some of these were suggested by our readers in various comment areas on our site and around the Internet; mad props to them all.

“…meatbag…” – HK-47, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series

Not an exact quote, per se, but a slice of language no one who played KOTOR will ever regret. An assassin droid with a terrible prejudice against organics, HK-47 was the best member of the best crew of Bioware companions ever assembled. Pay attention, Disney, and put this killer droid in Episode VII.

Useful for: Describing the contents of one’s grocery sack; perhaps describing certain formal gowns worn by Lady Gaga.

“Go for the eyes, Boo! Go for the eyes!” – Minsc, Baldur’s Gate series

Minsc is a large man with some sort of Tyson-esque purple face tattoo. Boo is his companion, a miniature giant space hamster. Don’t get it? Buy the enhanced edition of Baldur’s Gate that’s coming out soon. You won’t just get it; you’ll frickin’ love it.

Useful for: Urging minuscule pets to violence; reminding someone how best to apply the pepper spray they keep on hand for emergencies.

“The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.” – The G-Man, Half-Life 2

You got that right. Things were going just fine for the Combine before the One Free Man showed up. Freeman’s…errr…handler, I guess, is one creepy dude, and his steady, occasionally stuttered delivery lends an air of gravitas to even the simplest statements. The above, first uttered just prior to Gordon’s arrival in City 17, is one of the best.

Useful for: Waxing philosophical upon R. Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet” saga; explaining to the person on the other side of the glory hole why you aren’t interested.

“Stay awhile and listen…” – Deckard Cain, Diablo series

Town elder. Item identifier. Quest giver. Lore master. Cain plays many important roles throughout the Diablo series, and his distinct manner of speaking has spawned both a rap song and, as part of a Blizzard April Fool’s Day joke, a GPS voice pack. Diablo just wouldn’t be Diablo without Deckard Cain.

Useful for: Starting a Powerpoint presentation with 150 slides; warning the rest of the men’s room that something heinous is about to go down.

“It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this.” – Old Man, The Legend of Zelda

Why yes, kindly old man living in a dumpy, ill-lit cave, a sword could certainly come in handy against all the dastardly monsters I’m going to have to fight may through to rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon. Jaded, grown-up me can’t help wondering about that guy’s motives; swords aren’t cheap, and I can’t help thinking he’s either waiting for a favor or hoping that the princess’s return will improve the value of his mutual funds. Even recluses that live in caves have to retire sometime.

Useful for: Whispering into your son’s ear as you discretely hand him a Trojan on prom night.
